Habitat Description: 
Basalt cliffs, Upper Sonoran Zone.
Distribution Range: 
Snake River and its tributaries, eastern Washington and Oregon, to western Idaho. Type locality: Blue Mountains of North-west America.

Other Notes: 

Penstemon triphyllus has a range of 2-4 leaves per stem node, so the epithet "triphyllus" may be a bit misleading. This plant occurs on cliffs and roadcuts throughout its range, but the common denominator is the occurrence on basalt substrates.
