Habitat Description:
Not uncommon on stony hillsides, canyons and mesas.
Distribution Range:
Central Arizona from central Mohave County to western Graham County. The type is from Hackberry, Arizona.

Other Notes:
This is the Arizona counterpart of the well-known scarlet-burgler (P. centranthifolius) of coastal California. A plant collected near Springerville, Apache County, represents a considerable extension of the geographical and altitudinal ranges of P. subulatus. It approaches P. utahensis in its wider corolla, but the corolla is glabrous.
