Habitat Description:
Dry places in sagebrush, pinyon-juniper, Gambel oak, ponderosa pine, and mountain mahogany communities.
Distribution Range:
East slope of the Sierra Nevada from Alpine County south to the Tehachapi Mountains and mountains of south California, east across the south halves of Nevada and Utah to southwest Colorado and south to north Arizona and northwest New Mexico.

Other Notes:
The superficial resemblance of the strongly bilabiate, bright red corolla to that of P. barbatus is quite striking, but the differences in other characteristics are great enough to negate an idea of common origin. It is unfortunate to lose the use of the well known name P. bridgesii for this taxon.
