Habitat Description: 
Occupies openings in the pine-fir-hardwood forest.
Distribution Range: 
Distributed on the higher parts of the western slope of the Sierra Madre Occidental from Durango and Sinaloa south to Nayarit. Type locality: Metates, north of Cueva.

Other Notes: 

It is probably visited regularly by hummingbirds, although none were seen during the short time it was observed it in rainy weather. It may be confused with P. apateticus ssp. durangensis, but is larger in general size, has larger flowers, and broader leaves, and is apparently more westerly in distribution. The habitat as described by Pennell is pineland, and the name, from the Latin, may be translated as "place of pines".
