Habitat Description: 
In sagebrush, pinyon-juniper, Gambel oak, ponderosa pine, and sometimes bristlecone pine communities.
Distribution Range: 
Uinta Basin and Uinta Mountains in Duchesne, Daggett, and Uintah counties, Utah and adjacent Rio Blanco Coumty, Colorado.
Soil Type: 
Dry, gravelly or sometimes sandy soils.

Other Notes: 

Two varieties of P. pachyphyllus can be distinguished by certain characters. The name P. osterhoutii Pennell was used or some plants of P. pachyphyllus from the eastern Uinta Basin (Graham, E.H. Ann. carnegie Mus. 26: 333. 1937), but P. osterhoutii is a distinct species from just east of the Basin in Garfield, Eagle, and Routt cos., Colorado.
