Habitat Description: 
Sandy and gravelly washes and hills in Joshua Tree and sagebrush communities.Dry hills and sandy washes, Upper Sonoran Zone; desert ranges bordering Owens Valley.
Distribution Range: 
Endemic to the bases of the White and Inyo mountains, Mono and Inyo counties, California. Owens Valley.

Other Notes: 

Penstemon monoensis and its probable next of kin, P. calcareus Brandegee, from the Grapevine and Providence mountains (south of our region), appear to be very different from any other species of section Cristati. The reddish flower color of both species and peculiar pubescence of P. monoensis are unique in the group.
