Usually in openings in the lower oak or pine-oak zone.

Other Notes:
The typical pollinators appear to be hummingbirds, but bees visit the flowers and presumably also pollinate them. This species is quasi-sympatric with P. apateticus ssp. apateticus in Puebla and Oaxaca, but the latter species is more commonly found at higher altitudes in the pine and pine-oak zones, and the two species have not been seen together. There is slight evidence of possible introgression between them.
