Other Notes:
Penstemon flavescens is a narrowly endemic hexaploid species that is thought to have arisen through amphiploidy. Because of the morphological similarity, one suspected parent is P. confertus, a tetraploid, but flavescens has acquired several characters that could not have come from that source, such as the boat-shaped anther-sacs, the black-drying foliage, the staminode bearded farther back from the apex, and the dilated corolla. The other parent is unknown.
