Habitat Description: 
In shadscale, sagebrush, and pinyon-juniper woodlands.

East Nevada and west Utah to central Utah.

Penstemon dolius has been circumscribed with two varieties (dolius and duchesnensis). The latter was placed as its own species. The two taxa do not group as sister species in the most recent phylogenetic analysis (Wenzel dissertation 2016; Wenzel et al. in prep). Penstemon dolius groups in section Ericopsis, while P. duchesnensis groups in section Cristati (Andi Wolfe - 2017).
