"Collections from the Pine Valley Mountains and the mountains to the west in Washington Co., Utah and adjacent Lincoln Co., Nevada are intermediate between P. confusus and P. utahensis. Either these collections are hybrids in an area of overlapping distributions, or they represent an undescribed variety that would justify reduction of P. confusus to varietal rank under the older name P. utahensis." - Holmgren (1984)
