Penstemon barnebyi
"Like P. janishiae, this species has been split off from what has been referred to P. miser." - Holmgren (1984)
Noel Holmgren named this species in honor of Rupert Barnebyi (1911 - 2000), a taxonomist from the New York Botanical Garden. It is closely allied to P. miser and P. janishiae, another species split from P. miser. There is quite a bit of morphological variation in P. barnebyi across its range. The photos posted here are from two populations separated by more than 100 miles. I've posted the photos sequentially for each character, with the northern population (collected north of I-80) first. The northern population was more purple in coloration and lacked the extreme pigmentation within the corolla that was present in the southern population (collected near Ely, NV). - Andi Wolfe (2017)
