Habitat Description:
Sandy plains, prairies, and deserts, from desert shrub vegetation to pinyon-juniper woodlands.
Distribution Range:
The Dakotas and east Montana, south through the high plains to northeast New Mexico and west across north New Mexico to southeast, central and northeast Utah and northeast Arizona.
Soil Type:
Sometimes found in sandy soils.

Other Notes:
The two varieties are very distinct from each other, but through var. angustifolius of the northern Great Plains and var. caudatus (A. A. Heller) Rydb. of the southern Great Plains and northern New Mexico, the character differences merge.
