Penstemon albomarginatus grows in drifting sand. There are four populations centers: Arizona - Mohave County; California - San Bernardino County; Nevada - Clark County; and Nevada - Nye County. Each of the regions have populations with slight morphological differences. In each of the regions where it occurs, Penstemon albomarginatus is of conservation concern. The California populations are located in the Mojave Trails National Monument, which was designated in 2016.

Taxonomically, P. albomarginatus is in the same subsection as P. arenarius (see http://wolfelab.asc.ohio-state.edu/database/penstemon-arenarius). Their phylogenetic relationship is currently under investigation (A. Wolfe - 2017)
