"Penstemon albertinus intergrades with P. humilis in the Owyhee Mountains of southwestern Idaho, and a clear distinction between the two is often difficult. It may best be treated as a variety of P. humilis." - Holmgren (1984)

Notes from Andi Wolfe observations: even in a small geographic range, there is considerable variation among populations. The photos on this page are from three populations. Anthers range from typical divaricate dehiscence, to nearly saccate. Penstemon albertinus is hypothesized to be a parental species for varieties in the P. attenuatus complex.
