In sagebrush and pinyon-juniper communities and subalpine slopes in the Charleston Mts.
Distribution Range:
In Nevada from south Eureka, south White Pine, northeast Nye, and north Lincoln counties, south to the Sheep Range, Clark County; in California in the New York Mountains and Clark Mountain, San Bernardino County; in Utah in Kane County; in Arizona the Grand Canyon region and disjunct in Graham County.

Other Notes:
In the Charleston Mountains, Clark Co., Nevada, is subsp. jaegeri Keck, which has erect or ascending leafy stems and thyrsoid panicles. In the Sheep Range, also south of our area in Clark Co., Nevada, is an intermediate form with ascending stems and somewhat racemiform thyrses.
