Habitat Description: 
Dry to moderately moist rocky slopes from sagebrush foothills to open subalpine woods and meadows.
Distribution Range: 
Southwest Montana, east Idaho, and northwest Wyoming; possibly entering our region in the northeast Snake River Plains.
Soil Type: 
Dry to moderately moist soils.

Other Notes: 
Varieties of Penstemon attenuatus are hypothesized to be of hybrid origin, with P. concertus involved with var. attenuatus and var. palustris. Penstemon albertinus may be involved in the origin of all varieties. Penstemon globosus may be involved in the formation of var. militaris.
