Habitat Description: 
Dry to moderately moist rocky slopes from sagebrush foothills to open subalpine woods and meadows.
Distribution Range: 
East Washington to west Montana, south to east Oregon, Idaho, and northwest Wyoming. Marshy places in the southern Blue Mountains, Oregon (Baker and Grant Counties). Type locality: John Day River at Prairie City, Oregon.

Dry to moderately moist soils.

Other Notes: 

Varieties of Penstemon attenuatus are hypothesized to be of hybrid origin, with P. concertus involved with var. attenuatus and var. palustris. Penstemon albertinus may be involved in the origin of all varieties. Penstemon globosus may be involved in the formation of var. militaris.
