Habitat Description: 
Subalpine meadows and openings in aspen-spruce forests.
Distribution Range: 
North and west New Mexico and on the Coconino Plateau from the south rim of the Grand Canyon to Flagstaff, Williams, and Prescott and one collection reported from the Kaibab Plateau.

Other Notes: 
Penstemon virgatus A. Gray has been reported by Crosswhite (Amer. Midl. Naturalist 77: 30. 1967) from west of the junction of Cape Royal and Point Imperial roads on the north rim of the Grand Canyon (Collom s.n.). It can be distinguished from P. pseudoputus by certain characters.
