In recent years this material has been called P. suffrutescens Rydb. This name must go into synonymy under P. caespitosus subsp. suffruticosus (Gray) Keck as shown, but the specimen cited by Rydberg, which was a basis of his conception of P. suffrutescens, is now cited at P. Crandallii subsp. typicus.
