Habitat Description: 
Sandy places among sagebrush, pinyon, juniper, and ponderosa pine.
Distribution Range: 
East Washington County in the Zion National Park region and west Kane County from Orderville to Kanab and on the Kaibab Plateau. Cocoino County, Arizona.

Penstemon laevis is very closely related to P. speciosus and might be considered as a variety if it were not for the geographical separation of some 300 km and the extreme complexity in morphological variation of the latter. Unless some sense can be made of the variation in P. speciosus, the inclusion of P. laevis would be of no practical benefit. A hybrid between P. laevis and the red, tubular-flowered P. eatonii has been given the name P. X jonesii Pennell.
