This species has been cultivated for many years, however, and is one of the parents (apparently with P. cobaea Nutt.) of the common cultivated hybrids. Considering this, several collections from South and Central America present some difficulties of interpretation. A collection from Colombia, by its flower shape, pubescence, and leaf serrations, is clearly one of these hybrids. A similar interpretation applies to a few other collections from Bolivia, Chile, and Honduras.
