Habitat Description: 
Among rocks and on gravelly slopes in sagebrush-juniper vegetation. Rocky slopes in open coniferous woods, Arid Transition Zone to Hudsonian Zone.
Distribution Range: 
South British Columbia to central Oregon, remaining east of the Cascade summits, east to west Montana and west Wyoming, entering the Owyhee Mountains of southwest Idaho. Rocky slopes in open coniferous woods, Arid Transition Zone to Hudsonian Zone.

Other Notes: 

All collections examined from the Owyhee Mountains have all leaves entire, while throughout the rest of the range of var. fruticosus each plant has at least some of the leaves serrulate. A variable species of which the following two segregates are the least indistinct.
