"This species has also been classified as Penstemon dolius var. duchesnensis. Pennell (1920, p. 341) observed that the Jones s.n. (Theodore to Myton) collection differs in its dwarf habit and more widely spreading corolla lobes, and only because of the variability in the corolla lobes of the type of P. dolius is it placed with this species." Holmgren 1979

Penstemon dolius has been circumscribed with two varieties (doliusand duchesnensis). The latter was placed as its own species. The two taxa do not group as sister species in the most recent phylogenetic analysis (Wenzel dissertation 2016; Wenzel et al. in prep). Penstemon dolius groups in section Ericopsis, while P. duchesnensis groups in section Cristati (Andi Wolfe - 2017).
