Habitat Description: 
Loose, drifiting desert sand.
Distribution Range: 
Endemic to west Nevada, from the vicinity of Tonopah in northwest Nye and south Mineral counties, north to Fallon region, Churchill County, Nevada.
Soil Type: 
Sands and sandy soils.

Penstemon arenarius is in the same subsection as Penstemon albomarginatus (see http://wolfelab.asc.ohio-state.edu/database/penstemon-albomarginatus). Both occur in western Nevada in deep sand habitats. Their phylogenetic relationship is under current investigation. (A. Wolfe - 2017)
