Taxonomically and morphologically there is some confusion about many species in this group of penstemons. For example, Francis Pennell (1920) stated: "Penstemon abietinus is very closely related to P. linarioides var. sileri, and the two should perhaps be treated as conspecific varieties. Such a combination must be deferred until more is learned about the P. linarioides complex in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. Penstemon teucrioides Greene was reported from Utah (Rydberg, Fl. Rocky Mts., 1918), but has not been able to be confirmed."
